The Reluctant Magician
There is a thin red line
a ribbon of warning
on the horizon,
a silk handkerchief
pulled from a felt black hat,
unfolding a grey storm
upon the whole of the island.
The storm,
not isolated to the small boats
that dot the sea,
drenches through every pore
of the reluctant magician's trick.
"Oh I have suffered
with those that I saw suffer."
And regardless of my slight of hand
and nimble spells
could not save them.
I am a pretend Prospero.
Master and servant to Caliban
A savage roaring through my sleep
who I enslave in my dreams
with his sharp teeth.
"Oh I have suffered
with those that I saw suffer."
And replay this slight of hand
to my everyday tempest.
Oh come great storm.
Take me with you as you
move to the seas
and through the skies.
I wish no longer
to stand on the cliff side
orchestrating the wind.
