Preserving lemons in salt
Is not recommended
With a paper cut
Or a deep bruise to the knee
From picking Meyers from a fruit tree
Touching with the tips of my fingers
Before losing my balance
On the black and white metal step stool.

Catching thorns in my palm
After losing my balance
And scrapping my knee
Like a child’s wound
Looking worse than it appears
Or bruised more deeply, internally
Then my suffocated tears would allow you to see.

All this to prepare a dish
On the eve of a dinner you will not taste,
But I prepare with a memory stinging my palm.

Weeks from now,
when the canning of lemons offers
A collection of misgiven joy
And salted lost lands pressed to the tongue,
Or a bit of grace
Between a bitten lip and a forgotten song,
The opening releases
A small sorrow for a citrus fruit
Preserved for another time.
